Henri Matisse (1869-1952). During his long artistic career, he went through perhaps all the major art movements - from Impressionism to Abstractionism. Although the abstractly conceived girls dance around the centre, the audience perceives their desire to leave the image. The picture is reminiscent of a dream. Figures in the paintings are conceived as sculptures - Mattise achieved great expressiveness through excellent distribution of mass in the image and clarity of the image.
